Opening Performance
This year’s Daxi 624 Festival focuses on education outreach and the revitalization of traditional rituals, aiming to nurture the next generation through collaborations between local schools and community groups. The San-Cheng Xingshengshe Dragon Troupe has partnered with Daxi elementary schools—including Zhongxing, Tianxin, Baiji, Yuanshulin, and Fu'an—to teach students the spirit of the divine dragon through hands-on crafting and movement instruction. Yongfu Tongyishe continues to play a leading role in Beiguan opera transmission, with many young students now able to perform on stage.
The opening show features Luo Yung-Chang, composer of the festival theme song “Draw a Fortune Stick”, who joins the Bad Boy Rock Band from Kaohsiung. Blending rock, Beiguan music, and traditional dragon drumming, they will debut a brand-new festival theme song, showcasing a dynamic fusion of tradition and contemporary sound.
The Blessing Parade, organized by the Daxi Folk Arts Association, includes iconic elements such as leading flags, guardian children (Zhuangzi), Beiguan musicians, palanquins, and ceremonial guan dao (halberds). Through restored historical photos and recreated costumes, the parade revives scenes of children's lantern teams, umbrella-bearing women, youth processions with ink plumbs, and rarely-seen Western-style marching bands—reconnecting past and present festival memories.
Specially designed “Deity Puppets of Master Craftsmen” highlight the unique trades of Daxi: Fire God (Huo De Xingjun) for firefighters, Shennong Dadi for agriculture, Master Carpenter Lu Ban for woodworking, He Ye Xianshi for masonry, and Tiandu Yuanshuai for opera. These puppets will perform alongside Zhuangzi and Daxi Elementary’s mini deities, symbolizing the interwoven relationship between deities and local artisans.
In the face of changing industries and declining birthrates, this year’s festival calls for collective participation from schools, communities, and temple guilds to revive the "all-hands-on-deck" tradition of the Daxi 624 Festival—passing the torch, keeping the divine spirit alive for generations to come.
