Featured club: Daxi Coterie
The year 2017 happened to be the hundred-year anniversary of Daxi Coterie. This particular documentary chronicles the club’s preparation for the centennial celebration, how it’s run, and acknowledges the core spirit of “Daxi’s dedicated offspring.”
Daxi Coterie, established in 1917 (the 6th year of the Taishō era), is the most historic and storied Shetou of Daxi.
It was launched by a group of miners from Daxi who worked in the town of Jiufen of Keelung. In expressing their appreciation to Holy Emperor Guan Yu’s guidance to a profitable lode, the miners crowdfunded for the deity to make their first palanquin, and officially formed a coterie. This was the beginning of the use of “Shetou” as participating clubs in traditional festivals.
Despite its history, the Daxi Coterie’s centennial celebration is anything but stale! Young and middle-aged members of the club spent three years going over the designs of souvenirs and activities, in hopes of attracting more interest in the club.
Documentary made in 2017.
