Get into Daxi’s Festive Vibe
To preserve, pass on and promote Daxi’s folk culture, the Ecomuseum first established brand positioning for this iconic festivity with a museological approach: it combined “Daxi” and “Daxi” in a homonymic fashion to draw focus to the festival site and the birthday of a deity, defining it as an immersive urban jubilee experience enjoyed by the gods and mortals, and highlighting it as an extension and reimagining of “festive culture in real life.” In so doing, the Ecomuseum integrates tourism itineraries with local festivities to encourage public engagement. The end-result is a sustainable, community-based festival brand steeped in Daxi’s town-wide celebration of June 24.
Light-up Ceremony and Highlights from ‘Stomp-the-Street’ by Local Businesses
The order in which procession teams appear brings the event to a crescendo. 31 of Daxi’s most prominent Shetou’s, special performances and generals of the Three Kingdoms will be there to dazzle!
The formation of Shetou’s representing “community businesses and industries” is the greatest highlight of the Daxi procession. During the Japanese colonial period, members of various industries in Old Street Daxi formed Shetou’s to participate in the procession; fast-forward to today, residents voluntarily host a celebratory birthday procession in appreciation of Holy Emperor Guan Yu and his protection, on the 24th of June on the lunar calendar. This year, in acknowledging the spirit of these industrial stalwarts, event organizer invited Mr. Zhang Yijun – an artist of international repute – to choreograph a performance that spotlights Shetou’s made up of students, businesses and local entrepreneurs, to reenact the fanfare of a hundred-year-old tradition that is still going strong.
DAXI DAXI Street Procession Highlights around Puji Temple are a culmination of efforts from local Shetou’s, students and members of the public, committed to upholding this tradition, and making it an immersive experience for all the participants.

Gold and Glitter and Radiance” – a Workshop
Are you aware of the mystique surrounding the craft of buddha statue-making? Statue-making refers literally to the craft of creating effigies of deities. This traditional craft combines woodcarving and lacquering. The process is shrouded in mystique since it’s mostly passed down from the elders of the family to their offspring. No apprentices from the outside are accepted. This workshop features the making of a tumbler, taken from “roughcasting” of the statue-making craft, and a postcard foiling workshop, inspired by the “gold foiling” process. Join the fun of creating your signature craft and becoming an amateur lifestyle craftsman!
