This year’s Daxidaxi revolves around the welcoming the 24th day of the 6th lunar month pilgrimage culture, featuring a three week “advance festival” and the matching of cross-area designers and artists and local religious culture; collecting from traditional culture and using it as inspiration for creation, leading everyone on a tour of the old houses of the mountain town; combining temple fair, light and shadow, music, market and theater to celebrate the festival alongside local people, giving everyone an opportunity to encounter a contemporary festival amidst light and shadow and sound that span yesterday and today.

Patrol with the God

Patrol with the God will rearrange the traditional composition of the pilgrimage formations, with Puji Temple, 31 Shetou groups and a team from Shikoku in Japan performing together with a new type of performance that pays respects to belief that has been passed down for 100 years.
The teams will set off in traditional order. Led by the flag of Puji Temple, 31 flag formations will take everyone on a journey across the 100 years of the pilgrimage. There will be Artisans’ Monster and Happy Tong Zai (deity figures) and other things that symbolize Daxi Shetou artisan culture, and the formation unique to Daxi, the Three Kingdom Generals. The procession will feature pilgrimage symbols that are reinterpreted using contemporary design such as Daxi Rainbow Flag, Dancing Lions and Dragons and Thunder and Lighting Rainbow Clothes. A team from the Hyoge Festival in Kagawa Ken, Japan will also perform. Finally, the highlight will be Daxi’s first god palanquin carrying the statue of Lord Guan out on patrol, continuing the 100-year-old belief culture.

A 100-year-old house will be transformed after dark heralded by expertly played Beiguan music. On July 14, the highlight of Daxi Happiness Arrives X Night of Happy Dancing with the God will be held at Taoyuan’s only national historic site, the Former Residence of Li Sheng-fang, which will open its doors at night for the first time and become a dazzling techno stage.

Five Societies. Five Design X Pilgrimage Future
Creators who have paid attention to traditional Taiwanese cultural values for a long time have taken on the challenge of re-creating pilgrimage tradition. Through the music of cross-area producer Ke Chi-hao, the graphics of packaging designer Liao Xiao-zi, the fashion design of Chen Shao-yan, props that designer Wu Xiao-ru, who makes every effort to promote eastern aesthetics, was involved in making, and the Galaxy Gallery, a digital film and music team known for its dazzling style, approaching from different specialized areas, collecting from traditional culture and using it as the base for re-creation, adding new viewing points to the festival.

The holy general’s new clothes X Chen Shao-yan
New costumes for the Nongyou Group’s Duke of Thunder and Lady Thunder who are in charge of the weather. For convenience of use in the pilgrimage while remaining faithful to traditional culture, the original structure of the costumes was retained, the complicated decoration details simplified, and traditional images and colors paired, presenting a layered effect with a modern feel.
The new poles of the Shetou X Wu Xiao-ru
Making the picture by linking the characteristics of the original occupations of each Shetou group, the skills of which they are proud and smile that represents the god, decorated with bustling festival colors; and extending the rewarding of Shetou by temples as the good intention of the public appreciation flag of the tracks of the era, making a visual picture that playfully overturns tradition and inherits from the past while being innovative. In rainbow colors, walking into the festive pilgrimage procession, amidst joint celebration of god and people and dazzling light, passing through the time axis of folk culture, leaving behind all-new festival symbols in the contemporary era.

The calligraphy elements often used by Shetou are used, however, the lines are wild and powerful and almost abstract, expressing smooth arts formations elements, displaying vigorous vitality.

Interviews with local elders collected music and then re-composition carried out, fully recording and giving new life to the feelings about the pilgrimage celebration of Daxi representatives of skills of two generations.
